Tegueste
The borough of Tegueste is set in the valley from which the area takes its name. It used to belong to the kingdom of Tegueste.
After the conquest, land in the area was shared out and, according to chronicles, barely thirty years later, when "The Guanches still climbed the crags of Lagarete in Agua de Díos and dwelt in their caves, the conquerors, now Lords of the land, chose San Marcos, of the Gospel, as their Patron Saint" (J.D. Darías Hernández).
The first parish church devoted to this Patron Saint (seventh annex of La Concepción in La Laguna), founded by María Hernández de Vera, appears to have been built before 1530, but, as it was small for the churchgoers and located between two ravines, it was transferred; the parish was created in 1606 by Bishop Martínez de Ceniceros.
Tegueste is a farming and livestock district, especially cows, based on the abundance of its waters, grazing pastures and woods.
In the 16th century (1583), the Royal Court held two meetings here, fleeing from the outbreak of plague that was devastating the islands.
Very little was heard about the district in the 17th and 18th centuries, or in the early 19th century either. It gained its municipal independence with the constitution of 1812.
