Icod de los Vinos

Its origins go back to the close of the 15th century, with the arrival of the first settlers, who prepared the land for farming, opened up communication routes and built houses.

The area was previously inhabited by native Guanches of the kingdom, descendants of the tribe of the Ycodes.

The Ycoden river marks the place, with its abundant water and thick forests. This is where the church of San Marcos was built in the late 15th century, to worship the figure of San Marcos that the Guanches had had in their possession since before the Spanish conquest.

Sugar cane, vines and cereals are the first crops to be grown on these lands, generating wealth that was reflected in the magnificent houses that were built. The first industries were established, sugar mills, water mills, glass, etc.

The town layout was defined in the 17th century , around the monasteries founded by Augustinians and Franciscans.

The importance of the town grew steadily, becoming the capital of the district of Daute, because of its large population, wealth and farming and commercial prosperity.
