Ethnographic recovery activities

Walk through the heights. Recreation of bartering

An ethnographic rescue activity which shows how people walked alongthe paths and tracks of the Canaries until the middle of the 20th century. Over 50 individuals take part, demonstrating various jobs and activities that are now no longer practiced. They use tools, farming implements, beasts of burden and are attired in the clothes which would have been current during the times they are representing. The recreation is repeated three times on the same day, in three different boroughs. At the end of the last staging, a bartering scene is acted out in Santiago del Teide, an interchange of merchandise where no cash changes hands, something that was common in this era.

“Day of Traditions” in Chirche
“Day of Traditions” in Chirche

We are now approaching a date highly anticipated by the residents of Chirche, a town that enjoy the celebration of the Day of Traditions with special keenness. Thanks to the involvement of the residents, this celebration can carry out and enjoyed by hundreds of visitors each year, who share with us this meeting with culture and traditional wisdom, all in a magic and wishful atmosphere, moving for a few hours to the life of our town in the first half of the 20th century.
The effort that we make over the previous months with all the preparations and carrying out of the activity, is rewarded by several signs of support that we receive every edition, by the people who live the experience and help to its survival over time, reporting this celebration to the “Chircheros”, the recovery of our values, traditions and cultural heritage.

Traditional Threshing in El Tanque
Traditional Threshing in El Tanque

Cereal threshing was historically a deeply rooted custom in many parts of the Island, especially in El Tanque. In this region to the northwest of Tenerife, plenty of cereals were cultivated and once there were more than 300 threshing floors. On the third Saturday in July different activities are organised, such as workshops, talks, folklorie displays, photography competitions, exhibitions and a delicious Canary Islands lunch.
