Masca - Buenavista del Norte

The interesting hamlets of the borough of Buenavista del Norte are Masca, El Palmar, Las Portelas and Teno Alto, in the Macizo de Teno Nature Park.

Of the hamlets just mentioned, Masca is especially interesting as a picturesque hamlet that has been declared an ethnographic and architectural site. It is one of the best examples of Canary Island natural architecture to be found. The oldest building is the Casa de los Avinculados, in the hamlet of La Piedra. The small 18th century church is devoted to the Inmaculada Concepción. One of the local houses has been converted into a museum and craft centre.

Up until recently, the only communication with the outside world was the Camino de los Guanches (Guanche Trail), from El Palmar to Masca and from there to Santiago del Teide.

Rock engravings have been found in the surrounding area, on a rock used by the original natives as a sanctuary.

If you take the road from Santiago del Teide to Masca, the Cherfe look out point offers spectacular views over the whole area.

From El Palmar, you can also continue to Teno Alto, a hamlet of rural Canary Island buildings.
